Voter ID Cards

The Electoral Commission and the Conservative Party support voter ID cards. The Electoral Commission and Labour agree that voter impersonation is hardly an issue.

In the last General Election (2019), there were only four convictions of voter fraud. The population in that year was over 66 million: four out of 66 million is hardly an issue. (This doesn’t mean the issue shouldn’t be ignored. Rather, it means the problem isn’t as big as an issue as the Conservatives and international observers make it out to be.)

It’s interesting, but hardly surprising, that Labour and the Conservatives use one bit of information from the Electoral Commission to contradict the other party’s position … which is also aligned with the Electoral Commission.

Studies show minorities are disproportionally affected by these sorts of decisions. Hence at face value I can’t support these changes, especially when it’s prevented such a minimal problem. If the government were to negate these factors so that they were no longer an issue, however, there would be no reason to object.
